The Blues went one-up in the second minute through Thomas Gaardsøe before Jamie Clapham and then Darren Bent increased the lead. Franck Queudrue hit a late consolation for the Teessiders.

The Blues went behind to an Andy Johnson goal but got on back on terms as Darren Ambrose headed his eighth goal of the season. However, Danny Butterfield gave the points to the South Londoners late in the day.

Joe Royle's Town reign got off to a winning start as his side beat Slovan Liberec 1-0 at Portman Road. The victory, gained via a 68th minute Darren Bent goal, kept Town's 40-year unbeaten home European run going and sets up the second leg in the Czech Republic perfectly.

Town chairman David Sheepshanks introduced new manager Joe Royle to the press this afternoon and said the club needed a man with experience to turn its fortunes around. Royle himself asked supporters to give him a chance in this his fourth job as a league manager.
